Moonshine’s making a comeback, only not in the way you think. Recipes have been popping up all over Pinterest, but these aren’t the totally DIY — and very illegal — version popularized in the Appalachian region of the U.S. This trend is more about infusing store-bought, high-proof alcohol with another flavor, so it’s a little sweeter. And burns a hell of a lot less going down.
One of the most popular is Lemon Drop Moonshine, a riff on the old-timey hard candy. Or, if you were born after 1946, you might be more familiar with the citrusy cocktail of the same name. It’s been pinned more than 32,000 times, and it comes from a site devoted to the drink: The Moonshine Recipe Library.

The recipe calls for dissolving sugar in water, like you would when making lemonade, then letting the mixture cool completely before adding equal parts Everclear and freshly squeezed lemon juice (none of that concentrated stuff, because this is classy hooch, okay?). Pour it into mason jars, tighten the lid, and stick it in your fridge to chill. The longer the moonshine sits, the mellower it will taste, the website states.
Of course, don’t let that fool you — even diluted, this drink will knock you off your feet. Sip responsibly; you don’t want to wake up the next morning and realize you drunk-Snapped your Mumford-and-Sons-y ex. Even if he can rock suspenders like nobody’s business.
